Kelly Dean-Web Frontiersman... |
Back in the early days of the web, waiting 10 minutes for a page to load was a thrilling way to spend an afternoon. With my trusty 28.8 modem chuggin' along, I stumbled across Andrew Lienhard's experiment, JazzHouston.com. I proceeded to annoy him with a constant barrage of e-mails pointing out spelling errors, to the point that he hired me as copy editor (the pay was a free dialup account.....). From there I started writing occasional articles having little to do with jazz or Houston, but it gave me a chance to do my Dave Barry impersonations which amused me, at least.
After a trip to New York, Andrew announced that he was moving to the big city to pursue his dream as a code-slinger. He's done very well for himself, working for N2K, Sesame Street, & Vignette. He & his wife Stephanie are livin' it large in Astoria, and have no intention of ever returning to this hellhole.....er, I mean this lovely slice of the Gulf Coast.
So anyways, as he was heading for the exit, Andrew gave me the keys to JazzHouston, and made me Editor-In-Chief. I can't tell you the number of times that title has opened doors for me.....well actually, I can...the number is zero. Still, I've been proud to be associated with this excellent web site.
Future plans: When things get busy for me, my work at JazzHouston is the first to suffer. Obviously, my work & family have to come first, but I'd like to see JazzHouston continue on even when I don't have time to contribute. So, my dream is to automate the site. We've already done this with musicians' contact info & the bulletin board but I'd like to take it a step further and give every subscriber access to the calendar and maybe even to the article generator. Wouldn't it be nice if you had a gig to promote, and you could drop it into the on-line calendar instantly, or at least quasi-instantly? I've got an e-mail box full of items folks have been wanting me to add stuff, and I just haven't been able to do it. I'd love to stop being the middleman, and concentrate on new content.
Anyway, you can dig through my old articles or read some of the newer items I've contributed. Some of the older ones still make me laugh, so either they've stood the test of time, or I'm easily amused. Your mileage may vary.....
